Frio River

!±8± Frio River

Many know and call this beautiful stream The Frio or Frio River, however the real name is "Rio Frio"- Spanish for "Cold River." Anybody that has dipped their feet or whole body in The Frio Waters will agree the literal translation suits the Frio well. When near 100 degree Texas Heat hits, the Frio River and the lines of Shady Cypress Trees that encompass the area are known to be a perfect remedy for tourists and locals.

The West Frio is fed by springs beginning in the Northeast Tip of Real County North of Leakey, Texas- near where the popular H.E.B. Camp resides. Yes.. the same H.E.B. family that owns The H.E.B. Store - but you'll won't find groceries for sale here. In Leakey, The Frio joins forces with the East Frio and continues the rest of it's 200 mile southeast journey ending in the Nueces River mouth south of the town of Three Rivers, Texas.

During the Frio's voyage, it also ventures through the towns of Rio Frio, Concan, East of Uvalde, West of Pearsell, Knippa, Fowlerton, Tilden, Three Rivers and the counties of Uvalde, Frio, LaSalle, McMullen, and Live Oak. While in these above counties and towns, The Frio River also contributes to the damming of the Corder, Frank Kincaid, Miller, Garwood, Tips, Sirianni, V-Bar, & Shamrock Lakes and the Choke Canyon, Bennett, & Burns Reservoirs.

Many know the Frio River because it runs through the popular "Garner State Park" where over 200,000 thousands camp, swim, kayak, and paddleboat every year. The August 2008 Edition of Texas Parks & Wildlife Magazine ranks Garner second in their Top Ten "Texas" State Park Swimming Holes.

Even famous Country Music Stars sing about The Frio River.. Country fan or not.. there's a good chance you've heard or heard of the song "All My Ex's Live In Texas" by George Strait. Strait sings... "I remember that old frio river where I learned to swim......."

The "Frio River" area is also well known by vacationers for it's Crystal Clear Waters, Cypress Trees, Rolling Hills, Rock Beaches, Popular River Crossings, Tubing Routes, Horseback Riding, Wildlife, Texas Hospitality, Cabins, Cottages, Bunkhouses, Lodges, RV Sites, Tent Camping, and other accommodations that sit on or near The Frio River; concentrated in Concan, Rio Frio and Leakey Texas.

!±8± Ohio State Parks

From mountain bike riding, rock climbing, and snorkeling to winter camping, family camping, and backpacking there is a state park in Ohio with just the right activities for you. With 74 state parks scattered across the state, there is plenty to see and do in Ohio. Many of the parks offer historical exhibits, several with living interpretive programs and a few, like the Marblehead Lighthouse and several historic estates, provide tours for an enhanced experience.

Ohio state parks offer so much to do that most visitors want to stay overnight, so the park system provides a variety of affordable accommodation options to fit every vacation budget. 56 of Ohio's state parks have camping facilities with sites for tents and trailers, picnic tables, fire rings, and restrooms. Many of the campgrounds have electric hook-ups and other amenities as well. Horse camps are available at 18 of the parks with nearby access to excellent trails for horseback riding.

If you're interested in a camping trip but would rather not bring along your RV or your camping gear, Ohio's state parks have made it easy. Eight different parks offer campsite rentals of fully equipped tent sites with cots, a picnic canopy, cooler, lantern, and camping stove, while you can rent a furnished travel trailer with a private bath at four Ohio state parks. For a unique camping experience, visitors can rent a roomy teepee for six at five different parks or a comfortable yurt at one of six of Ohio's state parks. Kelly's Island state park, on peaceful Lake Eerie, offers luxury waterfront yurts that comfortably sleep six and are quite accommodating.

Several state parks in Ohio rent camper cabins that sleep up to 4, and sometimes 6. These quaint cabins are nestled in some of the best camping areas in Ohio and are located near all sorts of fun outdoor activities. Standard Ohio state park camper cabins provide beds, a cooler, and a camping lantern, while deluxe cabins often include camp stoves, microwaves, and sometimes mini refrigerators. A few state parks offer other amenities as well, including televisions, fireplaces, and more.

Larger cedar cabins can be rented at Alum Creek, Caesar Creek, East Fork, Grand Lake, and Geneva state parks. These rustic cabins are ideal family retreats, featuring a private bedroom and a loft area. All cedar cabins have full kitchens, bathrooms, and porches or decks. Most Ohio State Park cabins do not provide cookware, towels, or bed and kitchen linens. Coleman's stainless steel 2 person mess set is perfect for cabin camping.

South Bass Island State Park, one of the Lake Eerie Islands State Parks, offers a unique selection of lakeside rentals not found at any other Ohio state park. The four cabents are built like cabins, but feature canvas roofs for a more tent-like feel. Each cabent sleeps six and includes a bathroom and small kitchen. A television and cookware are provided with these rentals. The rustic cottage sleeps 8 with a private bedroom, living area, full kitchen, bathroom, screened porch and a deck.

If you want to enjoy a weekend offroading with your ATVs, rappelling at Hocking State Forest, or relaxing by the lakeshore with your fishing rod, Ohio State Parks are the place to be. With enough activities to please the entire family and a variety of camping and lodging accommodations, enjoying nature's beauty could never be easier.

CIA Archives: The South Vietnamese Coup Against Ngo Dinh Diem (1963)

thefilmarchive.org Ngô Đình Diệm (January 3, 1901 -- November 2, 1963) was the first president of South Vietnam (1955--1963). In the wake of the French withdrawal from Indochina as a result of the 1954 Geneva Accords, Diệm led the effort to create the Republic of Vietnam. Accruing considerable US support due to his staunch anti-Communism, he achieved victory in a 1955 plebiscite that was widely considered fraudulent. Proclaiming himself the Republic's first President, he demonstrated considerable political skill in the consolidation of his power, and his rule proved authoritarian, elitist, nepotistic, and corrupt. A Roman Catholic, Diệm pursued policies that rankled and oppressed the Republic's Montagnard natives and its Buddhist majority. Amid religious protests that garnered worldwide attention, Diệm lost the backing of his US patrons and was assassinated by Nguyen Van Nhung, the aide of ARVN General Duong Van Minh on November 2, 1963, during a coup d'état that deposed his government. In November 1963, President Ngô Đình Diệm of South Vietnam was deposed by a group of Army of the Republic of Vietnam officers who disagreed with his handling of the Buddhist crisis and, in general, his increasing oppression of national groups in the name of fighting the communist Vietcong. The Kennedy administration had been aware of the coup planning, but Cable 243 from the United States Department of State to US Ambassador to South Vietnam Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., stated that it was US ...
